Single Plane Trace heating data was collected from testing 1.78-mm (0.07 in.) thick polyimide PWBs and 0.965-mm (0.038 in.) and 1.49-mm (0.059 in.) thick FR-4 PWBs. The testing was performed in air and vacuum. Computer (thermal) models were developed that simulate the steady state and transient (time-dependent) temperature response for trace heating in each test board. The models were correlated to the test data. After correlating the models, copper planes were added to the models and used to develop charts that represent trace temperature rise as a function of current for traces in boards with copper planes. (The finite element models were developed using the thermal analysis software package ANSYS Thermal Analysis System [TAS]. The thermal models were correlated to the trace heating data collected in still air environments.) Figure 16.9 represents some of the results from that work. Figure 16.9 shows the temperature rise of an internal, 0.010 wide, 1 oz. (0.00135 in.) copper trace (13.5 sq. mil), in a 127 mm (5 in.) wide 127 mm long 1.78 mm thick polyimide board, with 1.85 amps. The baseline column represents a trace in a board with no copper planes. The other two columns represent the same trace and current, although now there is a 1 oz. copper plane in the board. The trace is centered in the board and can be above or below the plane. The center column illustrates the temperature rise if the copper plane is 0.508 mm (0.02 in.)

Standards for Visual Inspection Many standards cover printed circuit board assemblies. Most major electronics manufacturers have their own internally developed workmanship standards. However, the joint industry standard IPC-A-610D, Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies, is the standard most often referenced for criteria defining reliable solder connections. This standard was developed by the Institute for Interconnecting and Packaging Electronic Circuits (IPC) (www.ipc.org). The standard is a collection of visual quality acceptability requirements for electronic assemblies. It covers criteria for both pin through-hole and surface-mount technology solder connections. It also reflects requirements for three different classes of end products:

Class 1, general electronic products These include consumer products and some computers and computer peripherals. Class 2, dedicated service electronic products This class includes communications equipment, critical business machines, and instruments where high performance is required and for which uninterrupted service is desirable. Class 3, high-performance electronic products These products include commercial and military equipment for which continued performance or performance on demand is imperative.
